your Japanese food got me to thinking about one cold winter day -- a long time ago -- when I was stuck in Washington, DC waiting for a flight back to Texas. I was sitting in the lobby of the hotel when I was approached by three young Japanese naval officers who were looking for a fourth in bridge [my game of choice in college]. I noticed that, whenever they had a good hand I'd hear a hissing sound [sucking in air over clenched teeth) and words like "Oh, taksan trumps!!!. I got to doing it, too, and we all had a good laugh. Later, durng the Vietnam war I was -- while on R&R -- in a bar at the Kadena Air Base (Okinawa) officers club. The barman got a phone call and, for the next four or five minutes, his entire conversation was series of variously inflected 'HI', which I later learned could mean a variety of things like, 'Yes, Sir", "OK", "That's right". "Hi" is best done with a sudden burst of air [and a slight bow of the head]. Actually I'm pretty good at it!!

Later, again
