We ended up having lots of fun with the bon fire. I don't think it was as big as the fire of 99, the one we lit on New Years' Eve before 2000, but it was big anyway. There was much drinking and merrymaking, and confirmations all around that yes, we all (a) live in the south, and (b) we are more redneck than anything else. We all drove out to the place where it was set up, and when we got out here, I asked if we'd brought anything to drink, I was told I was crazy, then handed a beer. What's a bon fire without lots of beer? The only questionable thing that happened was the fact that they brought out a bottle of wine, correction a communal bottle of wine. Oh darn, they forgot glasses, so very few of us passed it around and took random harmless nips off of it throughout the night. I was not included in this grossness. Needless to say, all of us who could drink were either buzzed or slightly sloshed. I was in the former category. Everyone had a fun time. We even shot off some fireworks we'd had left over from last year. Unfortunately, my dad threw the mortar tube away, so he had to use a post hole digger (a hollow steel tube); we live on the edge here at my house. To sunnyblue, my Dad even had some black cats left over and he threw them on the fire too, so no changes there My Dad's still as crazy as ever. Moving on to more joyous and interesting thigs than guzzling alcohol and being dangerous.
I got my first piano when I was five. It was a utilitarian upright, used, and a great one for a little kid like myself to learn the greatness of piano. I always hated practicing. Well, I should qualify that by saying that after the newness wore off, practicing became a chore, one to be done every day for thirty minutes. Mrs. Appleby was my teacher, and though she was tough, she knew I'd do something with my life. I never really like classical music, but stuck with it anyway. When I was about 11, we decided to upgrade to a newer, better, more fun, piano, ne that my sister and I could enjoy playing in our thirty minutes of torture. My parents urged us to get a "real" piano, but no, we wanted something cool! So e got this really fancy digital piano which did lots of cool things and had a, for the time, good sounding piano sample on it. As I got older, technology got better and I started enjoying playing a real piano more and more. So since I was in high school I've wanted to ditch the digital and get a real one again because the piano sounds on my sound card could beat our digital piano any day.
So yesterday, after spending my Chili's Gift card and eating some tasty food there, we went to the Internation Piano Gallery, which is quite a large piano store here in the state. And it WAS large too, they claim its the biggest piano store in Arkansas. I would agree. They had like over 100 pianos there. Its a piano musician's dream store. I tried out uprights, baby grands, and full sized grand pianos. I even got to try a piano hand-made in Italy that was $180000. It sounded great, but it was a bit out of my price range. Liz says she even sounded good on it and she says she can't play too well. We were about ready to try to figure out how to fit a baby grand into our living room when I tried this beautiful Kawai upright piano. I'd tried one of the same model earlier in the afternoon but it didn't impress me at all. The price for the used one was right, but the sound was all wrong. I didn't know this, but some people, as some do with cars, change how they sound. They'll either make it brighter (louder in the highs) or soften it (more mellow sounding). We figure the person who owned the particular piano I tried first probably did this to it. The new one though ... Wow!!!
I don't actually have it here, but I officially own it. Well, actually the bank owns it still, but it'll be here on Monday and I can't wait. The plan was to deliver it here today, but Henry, the guy who sold it to me, was the only one in the store today, and he couldn't get away to get it to me. Oh well, as long as he gets here when he says he will, I don't mind.
Its actually got a sounding board that's the same size as a baby grand, so basically its a grand piano that's on its side in the upright position. Its' for people like me with limited space. Its such taht it could even fit in an apartment. Very cool.
Today will mark a very special day in my life as well. Its the first day I've ever been in debt. I don't know if this is a good thing, but I got my first loan today, and I'm actually kind of feel like I'm older somehow. I'm doing this more so that (a) I don't have to pay so much at the outset and (b) I have a better credit score if I ever need t later on in life. That, and doing this allows me to have the piano sooner.
And today is New Years Eve. A day of reflection for some, a day where I realize how much I've grown as the years move on. We just got back from going to a coffee shop to hang out with dlambert and controlg and as expected, we had a great time eating and conversing. We talked about Denna's job, Chris's never ending Job search, and we even found time to play with Denna's Packmate and most importantly, Chris's new color recognizer which we all had fun with. The color recognizer's job is to tell us poor blind dudes, in a very sexy woman's voice I might add, what color something is.
After getting back from Sufficient Grounds, we went to the Australian store here close to where I live. I had fun talking with the owners about Australian things, and I even bought some meat pies. I can't really describe meat pies (hamburger meat and gravy on a pastry, maybe???), but all I can say is, What are you Americans missing?
My friend Neil is planning on coming over this evening to hang out for New Years. Since we have already done most of what we usually do on New Years (fireworks etc.), we're probably just going to hang and attempt to stay awake. I'm already kind of tired, I don't know if this will happen but who knows.
And that probably should end this long entry. Aren't you boring people who don't want to read my ramblings glad I cut it up for ya :). All the best and have a Happy New Year!!!!
