It's been a pretty good week for me. The short story. ... The piano is tuned, yay, I fixed the pedal which wasn't working properly, programming's going well, and I've scanned lots of books lately.
I tutored three days this week for four hours a pop and helped very few people. I had lots of time to get programming and other homework done, and read a book. I'm supposed to help people especially, who are totally lost in statics. This is pretty funny, because I needed tutoring in statics about a year ago as many of you readers know about. The third tutoring day was one where I filled in for someone as a Spanish tutor. That's where I finished my last programming assignment. And those tutoring days are pretty much the highlights of my day (and week) because it gets me out of my room for a while.
Tuesday night after tutoring though, I thought I would go and check out the state of the pian, as I'd done this every once and a while hoping it would be tuned. I had heard a tuning sequence earlier in the week, but doubted that this was true and put it back to a figment of my imagination, or the fact that I probably was hearing things. I wasn't hearing things though as when I walked back to the music room, I found a "almost" tuned piano. It's tuned pretty well, but there's a note or two for which I'd have my piano tuner come back and fix in short order. Considering how long it took to get this one tuned, I'm not complaining because it sounds one heck of a lot better than it did. The pedal wasn't fixed though, so I opened up the piano and found the screw that creates tension on the thing. It must have been really loose as I had to tighten the wing nut ten turns or so to get a working pedal. Perhaps I should become a piano technician or something? I'll take engineering any day. So now, I envision more trips to the music room in my future. Very cool.
On the funding front, I have officially been funded. I guess the department met on Tuesday and decided that they would give me a five semester teaching assistantship, which means that my tuition and stipend are covered. I have to do stuff (Teach or help teach undergraduates), and we are still looking for more funding for computer things to complete my project and fund my internship, but this all is small compared to the greatness of being *covered* once and for all for education. I was very happy that day.
Valentine's Day was Monday and I got flowers! It's basically a plant type thing with baby rose type flowers, so it hasn't died, yet. I hope I can keep water going to it so I can remember the day. I'm still working on Liz's present. I know, it's late, but it should be cool. Gift type has been redacted and classified. It's been six months as of this week. THat's a long time.
I'm thinking about offering programming services via bribery to my advanced calculations class. Apparently, in talking to my professor yesterday, I came up with a "grea"t idea, one that he hadn't come up with. He told the class yesterday afternoon. Most didn't ask me for help, but a couple people did. I didn't know what price I should ask for giving advice, so I gave them a cryptic clue and left. Until Tuesday when it's due, I'm keeping my ideas most definitely classified yet again.
I'm planning on going back to the public library today to get out of my room and hang out somewhere else. It's definitely a change in pace to leave here, and it underlies the fact that I still really don't like being trapped on the other side of Maple (a busy and anarchical street that I have to cross to get to the rest of campus) away from the union coffee shop. I'm hoping to learn the bus system next week, but until then, my occasional trip to the public library or a borrowed golf cart trip to the Union will have to do. Either way I get coffee, and that's a good thing.
Well, I'd better go and eat lunch. Perhaps I'll be able to write a more coherent entry this afternoon when I get to the library. I don't know why I can't put words together in a pattern that I like today, but I figured that I should probably write a scattered entry than no entry at all. Take care and I'll write when I get something neat to write about.
